Standing proudly at 5,897 meters (19,347 feet), Cotopaxi is one of Ecuador’s most recognizable landmarks and one of the world’s highest active volcanoes. Its nearly perfect snow-capped cone draws mountaineers from around the globe, offering an exhilarating experience for both seasoned climbers and ambitious beginners. Located in the heart of the Cotopaxi National Park, just south of Quito, it serves as a highlight in Ecuador’s famed Avenue of the Volcanoes.

The Climb

The Cotopaxi climb is both a technical challenge and a rewarding adventure. The journey begins at José Rivas Refuge, situated at 4,864 meters (15,953 feet). After a hearty dinner and a short rest, climbers typically set off around midnight to take advantage of optimal ice conditions on the glacier. Equipped with crampons, and ice axes, and guided by ASEGUIM-certified professionals, the ascent navigates crevasses, ice slopes, and occasionally challenging weather conditions.

The route requires endurance and acclimatization but is achievable for those with good physical preparation. As the summit nears, the crisp, thin air challenges every step, but the reward is unmatched: an epic sunrise over a sea of clouds and panoramic views of neighboring volcanoes like Antisana, Cayambe, and even distant Chimborazo. At the summit, climbers stand at the edge of the volcano’s massive crater, a testament to Cotopaxi's raw, volcanic power.

Acclimatization and Preparation

Due to the high elevation, proper acclimatization is essential. Recommended pre-climbs include nearby peaks such as Rucu Pichincha (4,698m), Pasochoa (4,200m), and Iliniza Norte (5,126m). Spending a night at Tambo Paxi Lodge or the José Rivas Refuge can also help with altitude adjustment. Training hikes prepare climbers for the physical demands and give them a chance to adjust to Ecuador’s high-altitude terrain.

When to Climb

The best time to climb Cotopaxi is during Ecuador’s dry seasons: June to August and December to February. Clearer skies and stable conditions make for safer and more enjoyable ascents. However, the climb remains open year-round, depending on weather conditions.

Why Choose Cotopaxi?

Cotopaxi is not only one of the most accessible high-altitude climbs in the world but also one of the most scenic. It combines technical mountaineering, breathtaking landscapes, and the thrill of standing on an active volcano—all within a short distance from Quito. Climbers are rewarded with unforgettable views, lasting memories, and a profound sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit.
