DETAILS
Surrounded by snow, myths and clouds, Mount Olympus is the highest and most famous mountain in Greece. At the boundary between Macedonia and Thessaly, it dominates the Thessalian plain and the Thermaic Gulf. Skolio peak - the second-highest sub-peak after Mytikas- completes an arc of about 200 degrees, with its steep slopes forming on the west side, like a wall, an impressive precipitous amphitheatrical cavity, 700 meters (2,300 ft) in depth and 1,000 meters (3,300 ft) in circumference, the 'Megala Kazania'. Up until the end of April, climbing to Skolio peak starts from the small town of Elassona. Have a look at the itinerary for more details. Keep in mind that this is a quite strenuous hike and requires good physical condition. Total hiking time, 7 to 8 hours. Distance covered 14km - elevation gain 1200m.
