Overview
Chitwan National Park, established in 1973 as Nepal’s first national park and designated a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site in 1984, is a jewel of biodiversity located in the subtropical Inner Terai lowlands of south-central Nepal. This rich and vibrant ecosystem is home to the second largest population of the endangered one-horned rhinoceros and serves as a crucial sanctuary for the Royal Bengal Tiger, one of the world’s most threatened big cats.
The park boasts an impressive variety of wildlife, including over 544 bird species — the highest concentration in any protected area globally. It shelters 31% of Nepal’s mammal species (68 species), 61% of its bird species, 34% of amphibians and reptiles, and 65% of the country’s fish species, making it a recognized biodiversity hotspot.
